Yu-Wei Hsiao (Dr. Yoyo)

Dr. Yu-Wei Hsiao is a violin and piano instructor, performer, and show producer with a doctoral degree in Violin Performance from Rutgers University. With over 17 years of teaching experience, Dr.Hsiao is dedicated to nurturing a love for music in students of all ages. His teaching career has included prestigious institutions like Rutgers University and private schools like Church Street School for Music and Art, Song of Songs Group, and Opus 118 Harlem School of Music. Dr. Hsiao works with students to develop their technical skills and musical expression.


In addition to teaching, Dr. Hsiao has performed with Berkshire Opera Festival in the first violin section at venues such as Colonial Theatre and Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center. He has also performed at renowned venues such as Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, the Apple Room at Jazz in Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and Circle in the Square Theatre. Dr. Hsiao has co-produced shows and been invited to perform at various venues including Flushing Town Hall, Gibney Dance Theater, Culture Lab LIC, Bryant Park, and Union Square. His performance and creative background enriches his teaching, providing students with practical insights into the world of professional music and performing arts.


Growing up in a family-run private music school in Taiwan, Dr. Hsiao developed a natural affinity for musical teaching. In his teaching, Dr. Hsiao not only improves students’ weaknesses but also identifies and amplifies their strengths, guiding students at their own pace. His lessons emphasize music theory, music appreciation, rhythm training, ear training, sight-reading, and singing. Dr. Hsiao also has experience in bilingual teaching, in Mandarin and English, and has taught music bilingually at 15 preschools and 3 libraries since 2022 in NYC. Apart from teaching music, Dr. Hsiao has also taught dance in Taipei, New York, and Washington DC.


Dr. Hsiao has helped many students receive high scores in NYSSMA and ABRSM exams and is the winner of the 2024 Charleston International Music Competition. In addition, Dr. Hsiao is the 2023 grantee of Flushing Town Hall Arts Grants and a panelist of the New York Foundation of Arts. He is currently accepting new students and would be delighted to discuss how his teaching can help you or your child reach your musical goals.
